1. What am I going to write about?
Three methods that can be used to get started:
A -brainstorm; write down every idea that pops into your head about the topic
B- free-write; just start writing about the topic; don’t worry about anything: grammar, spelling, whether it makes sense, where it is going ---
C-just keep writing; keep a notebook; keep a notebook handy at all times when an idea might occur to you
Questions that will determine whether or not the topic fits the assignment:
a. Will this topic really satisfy the reader?
b. Is the topic something I can write about?
c. Is the subject narrow or concise enough?
2. Who is going to read this?
A- Who is the intended audience?
B- How much does the reader know about what I am writing?
C Will the reader understand any technical terms or jargon I might use in the piece of writing?
D - What style would this reader prefer: formal or informal?
3. What is the purpose of this piece of writing?
The purpose makes a difference in how you write. Being conscious of the purpose you are trying to accomplish makes subtle differences in the way you express yourself.
Revising
