Basic tips of writing
Writing Basics --- Getting started: Three basic questions to answer: 1. What am I going to write about? 2. Who is going to read this writing? 3. What is the purpose of this writing? 1. What am I going to write about? Three methods that can be used to get started: A -brainstorm; write down every idea that pops into your head about the topic B- free-write; just start writing about the topic; don’t worry about anything: grammar, spelling, whether it makes sense, where it is going --- C-just keep writing; keep a notebook; keep a notebook handy at all times when an idea might occur to you Questions that will determine whether or not the topic fits the assignment: a. Will this topic really satisfy the reader? b. Is the topic something I can write about? c. Is the subject narrow or concise enough? 2. Who is going to read this? A- Who is the intended audience? B- How much does the reader know about what I am writing? C Will the reader understand any technical terms or jargon I might use in the piece of writing? D - What style would this reader prefer: formal or informal? 3. What is the purpose of this piece of writing? The purpose makes a difference in how you write. Being conscious of the purpose you are trying to accomplish makes subtle differences in the way you express yourself. Revising Good writing is a process of writing and then reworking until the writing is powerfully effective. |
